What's your secret sauce?

I have heard this phrase tossed around in some podcasts lately, but all of the sudden, it means a lot to me.

I just finished participating in the Women's Business Center Business Accelerator, and my biggest takeaway was on this topic.  Before we even talked business at all, we started our work with personality assessments that told us who we truly are.  Then we shifted to discussing our values, and our reason for starting our business.

The moral of the story?  Who you are is the most valuable thing you bring to your business or your career. It's what makes you unique. It's what makes you stand out.  There are a million burger restaurants in the world, but you have a favorite one.  Why is that? Why does it stand out? That's their secret sauce.

I learned that my secret sauce is made up of my personality and business goals.  I LOVE encouraging women, helping them feel safe and confident, and supporting them as they become who they want to be.  That's the purpose of Annex, and it is a unique focus for a coworking space.

So, what's your secret sauce?

I have no idea what I'm doing

How often do you feel this way?

If your answer is "often" or "always", you're in good company. From the poll on my Instagram stories, it looks like most of us feel pretty clueless much of the

time. I think this is to be expected, especially for people who are trying new things, building a business, or attempting to change the world. If this describes you, then you are in uncharted waters, and it only makes sense that you will need to use guesswork and adjust your plan frequently.

If that "I have no idea what I'm doing" feeling is overwhelming today, let me make a couple of recommendations.

First. Reach out to someone who is trying something new and ask for their experience. Even if they look like they've got it all together, I promise you, they have no clue what they are doing most of the time. And, by reaching out to a kindred spirit, you begin connecting to people around you and building a supportive community. You know how I love a supportive community!

Next, listen to the most recent episode of the How I Built This podcast (here). I can think of many examples of people who created successful businesses when they had no idea what they were doing, but these two share their ignorance very openly, and I just love it.

Don't stress. You are right where you are supposed to be, and you have everything it takes to figure out the next step. You've got this.

we're one year old!

Well friends, we've been open a year over here! It was such a huge milestone for me, and I'm feeling really blessed to own this business. It's so much fun to be a part of women changing their lives and businesses.

How are you doing? I'd love to hear about the milestones you are hitting. Got your first client? Sold your first project? Hired your first employee? I've got to know!

In the meantime, our community is growing! We're finding new ways to help one another reach our goals, and making new friends left and right. If you've been thinking of joining us, I'm offering a special for this month only. If you join Annex in August, you'll get $50 off your first month!

Pod Squad

We started a new thing around here.

I am OBSESSED with podcasts (probably because I hate reading business books), and many of our members are too.

So... I created Pod Squad.  Think book club, but instead of reading a book, we all listen to the same informative/inspirational podcast and then discuss it together over lunch.  Our first meet-up was a few weeks ago and it was such a blast!

We listened to one of my all-time favorites:  the How I Built This episode about Sara Blakely from Spanx (find it here).

If you're feeling discouraged, clueless or unsure, click that link and give it a listen.  Sara had absolutely NO CLUE what she was doing, like many of us! She just took one step at a time, believed in her idea, and never gave up.  That's something we all can do with a little inspiration and support from others.

From Sara, I learned that you don't have to be an expert to build something amazing.  You don't need a business degree, a rich uncle or a five year plan.  You just need to keep moving forward when things get tough.

Remember that!

If you'd like to attend Pod Squad this month, we'd love to have you!  Space is limited to six people, so get your ticket via the link below.  Lunch from Zoe's is provided with your ticket purchase.

I've been struck lately...

I've been struck lately by the insane diversity of the work we are all doing.  I've met multiple varieties of photographers, dieticians, social media managers, coaches, Facebook ad experts, data analysts, healers, merchants and creators of all kinds.

It's so inspiring to see women taking their knowledge, passion, and experience and channeling it into a business or career that is making a difference.  You ladies are finding new angles and doing new things that have never been done before.

Whatever it is that YOU are doing, remember that it is significant.  Your. Work. Matters. It impacts the lives of the people and institutions around you.

If you're not sure how your work can fit in at Annex, I assure you, it will.  We've got women hosting huge classes, small workshops, and teaching, healing, and marketing their hearts out within our walls.  Your unique brand of business is very welcome here. Just reply to this email if you'd like to learn more about membership!

We're all working on big projects, so we may as well work on them together!  I've heard from so many women who are working on creating or editing their own website, that I thought we'd focus this month's coworking event on that topic.  Website strugglers unite.

Of course, you can work on anything at all during this event! Bring your to do list and get some things done!

Join us on May 29th for our Website Wednesday coworking event!

This is a chance for non-members to experience working at Annex and connect with like-minded women! We'll be hanging out from 12-4 pm, working, drinking coffee, and getting to know one another better.  We'd love you to come, and a $7 ticket gets you in the door.

take the next step

I'm really lucky. I get to meet women when they are in the process of changing their lives! So many of you are starting or growing new businesses, following dreams and bringing new creations into the world.
Change is an anxiety-producing situation, and I was reminded today that mindset really matters in these moments. As you do this challenging work, remember that it's all about making forward progress. Some days it will be achingly slow, and other days you'll make huge leaps. Give yourself grace for the mistakes that and missteps that will occur along the way.

Just take that next step.  You are doing amazing work

focused fiesta.png

It's Fiesta time in San Antonio, but we've still got to get things done.  Let's work together!

Join us on April 25th for our Focused Fiesta coworking event!

This is a chance for non-members to experience working at Annex and connect with like-minded women! We'll be hanging out from 12-4 pm, working, drinking coffee, and getting to know one another better.  We'd love you to come, and a $7 ticket gets you in the door.

Don't Hate, Collaborate

Around here, the unofficial theme of February is COLLABORATION.

Here's why:

Running a business (or even working remotely) is very isolating, and you often find yourself struggling to solve problems on your own.  And being alone is downright scary.

I think that collaboration is the answer.  When you're sharing a task/event/project with another business owner, all of the sudden you're not alone!  You have someone to brainstorm with, to commiserate with, and you have access to their skills, knowledge, and network.  It's a win-win.

To be honest, one of my greatest weaknesses is a fear of asking for help.  Maybe it's because I've spent so long in the "helping professions" of social work, counseling, and assisting, but I'm much more comfortable in the position of the helper than the "helpee".

So, I'm easing into it.  I'm collaborating with as many people as I can, on as many projects as I can.  It's amazingly fun, and I recommend it with my whole heart!

The best collaborations come about when you are working daily with a like-minded person (say, as a member of a coworking space *wink *wink), but I'm hoping to help forge some new collaborations inside and outside of Annex this month.

If you're free on February 19th, come to Don't Hate Collaborate where we'll be working, drinking coffee and connecting future collaborators.  I'd love to see you there!
